Reflection
I was outside the other day and realized something pretty profound: It has been 2 months since I last heard an airplane fly over my house. Our old homestead in Colorado didn’t have many airplanes overhead, but we did have a few United puddle hoppers from Denver to Colorado Springs plus a handful of other flights circle around for an approach to COS from the north. But here on the eastern edge of Red River Gorge? Nothing. Oh, I see high-elevation flights far overhead, but I cannot hear them. The skies here are completely quiet. How nice.
Our Solution
Our solution is pretty straightforward: Briarhopper Ranch will stay put here in Eastern Kentucky, far away from airport flight paths, for the foreseeable future. We pray that we’ll be here in Eastern Kentucky for the next 20 years. Old age and health concerns may pull us into the city earlier than we hope, but we’ll be hard(er) of hearing by then.
Your Key Takeaway
I realize it’s not realistic or even desired for many of you to move so far out in the boonies. I do recommend, however, that you spend at least one week a year far enough away from civilization and out of airline flight paths that you can experience quiet skies. It really is a joy to live, in that sense, more like our great grandparents did: Dark nights, quiet and clear skies, no major airline hassle from above.
