Trail Breakdown & Conditions

• The Approach: The trail begins as a wide, easy-going gravel roadway (Tunnel Ridge Road section) before transitioning into a single-track woodland path.
• The Terrain: Features moderate inclines and steep sections served by built wooden staircases. Note: Watch your footing, as a few wooden steps are weathered or rotted away.
• Side Trip (Arch of Triumph): The spur trail leading off to Arch of Triumph is significantly narrower and slightly overgrown, but well worth the short scramble for a quieter view.

Scenic Highlights & Tips

• The Main Attraction: Panoramic views of the gorge climaxing at Double Arch, a vast two-tiered natural sandstone bridge.
• Scramble with Caution: You can ascend the natural sandstone stairs (also known as flint steps or ironstone steps) carved directly into the rock face to reach the upper window. Only climb to the top if you are fully comfortable with heights and exposed edges.
• Hiking with Dogs: Leashed dogs are welcome! Important: Be sure to pack plenty of water for your pups. The small springs and seeps along this route are small, seasonal, and unreliable for drinking water.
