Meet the Locals: The North American Crawdad

Call them crayfish, crawdads, mudbugs, or crawfish: no matter which name you prefer, they all refer to the same resilient little freshwater crustacean. These creatures are standard inhabitants of clean, healthy ecosystems throughout North America. They thrive in freshwater habitats where they can find plenty of cover, feeding on a wide variety of organic material including decaying plants, leaves, insects, and small fish.

Here on the farm, where we lovingly call them “Kentucky Land Lobster”, you will find them just about everywhere. While they love the steady water of the stream and creek beds, they are equally at home anywhere the ground stays damp. They frequently burrow deep into saturated soil, leaving behind their telltale mud “chimneys” across low-lying spots and marshy ground. They also play a vital role in our local food chain, serving as a primary protein source for raccoons, herons, pond bass, snakes, and even wild turkeys.

As you explore the property, keep an eye out for these little engineers going about their work. As with all wildlife on the farm, please leave them alone to enjoy their natural habitat, and remember that even a small crawdad comes equipped with a working pair of pinchers!
